Winter Solstice 冬至(TOji)

Winter solstice is called Toji in Japan. One of the interesting customs associated with Toji is taking hot bath with yuzu citrus fruits. It is believed to warm body, refresh spirit, and warding off illness.

The longest night of the year means the day once again begin to grow longer. The return of the Sun!

In many cultures, there are special customs and celebrations which symbolize the opportunity for renewal and embracing of hope. It is also a time for a family and friends to get together and enjoy the memories in the year they have had.

I have two small yuzu trees and harvest this year’s crops. I probably won’t take yuzu bath, but I plant to make yuzu jam, pickled daikon with yuzu and yuzu miso!
